Q. Is diamond a good investment?

The answer depends on whether you are investing in the diamond itself, or in what a diamond represents.

Diamond prices have been steadily increasing for the past 20 years, and diamonds tend to hold their value. Given this, it is extremely unlikely that diamonds will ever entirely lose their value, in spite of how the market may change in the future. However, no one can predict, with absolute certainty, which way the market will swing and, in general, we do not recommend buying up high-quality diamonds as a main part of a financial/retirement plan.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a source of beauty and a symbol of eternity and everlasting love, there are few objects you can choose that will surpass a diamond's perfection. Diamonds have inflamed man's passions since the first moment at which they were discovered, and their power over our emotions and desires has only grown since then. As a timeless and beautiful gift to yourself or as an emblem of your commitment to another, a diamond is an excellent investment.

Ultimately, whether you choose to consider it an investment, a symbol, or a unique work of art, you can be certain that by buying your diamond from Mondera, you are always getting a beautiful diamond and an excellent value for your money.

Q. What type of diamond is good for investment value?

Diamond prices are based on demand and supply and that varies with many factors. In the past, 1+ carat high quality diamonds were sold sooner than bigger stones, today any diamond that is 4 carat upwards with high quality is sold within a day.... so, the bigger the better. In general, I would recommend buying DEF/VVS in 2ct + for the longer term, and the same quality in 1.10+ for the 3-5 year term. All this is based on buying from us at direct from Antwerp prices rather than from designer shops were no matter what diamond you buy you will lose ca. 50-70% as soon as you walk out of the door due to the retail margins.

Q. What are the most important criteria when selecting a diamond?

Everyone has different tastes when it comes to an ideal diamond. The 4 Cs which are cut, clarity, color and carat are excellent guidelines when choosing a diamond

Cut

The cut is what really gives the diamond its brilliance or luster. It is not only the shape, but also its number of facets, proportions, polish and symmetry. The most popular diamond cuts are: round, princess, marquise pear, emerald and oval. However, other fancy cuts are available.

Color

The closer a diamond's color is to colorless, the more valuable a diamond. Despite this, most diamonds do show a trace of yellow, brown or gray. Color is based on a predetermined alphabetical scale ranging from D to Z. D-F is colorless and most rare. G-J is near colorless with good to very good color. K-M is lightly colored, but has noticeable yellow or brown tint.

Clarity

Clarity refers to the number and type of inclusions or slight imperfections present in a diamond. The fewer the number of inclusions, the greater the value of the diamond. Diamond transparency, which refers to the cloudiness of a diamond, also affects its value. The following are abbreviations for classifications that are used world wide to describe the clarity of a diamond:
  • IF, FL: Internally flawless.
  • VVS1, VVS2: Near flawless and extremely difficult to impossible to find any inclusions under magnification.
  • VS1, VS2: Completely clean to the naked eye, and moderately to very difficult to find inclusions under magnification.
  • SI1, SI2, SI3: Completely to almost completely clear to the naked eye (eye clean) when viewed from the top.
  • I1, I2, I3: May or may not be easy to find imperfections with the naked eye, but easily visible under magnification.
Carat

The carat of a diamond refers to its weight. The larger the carat is the more rare and valuable the diamond. Diamonds are described in ¼ increments. It is important to remember that two diamonds of equal carat may reflect different values due to cut, clarity and color.

Q. Are all your gemstones genuine?

Yes, all Diagold Jewelers stones are genuine, with the exception of our Birthstone charms.

Q. How should I clean diamond jewellery?

Here are some general guidelines for the care and cleaning of your diamonds:

- Avoid wearing your diamonds while doing housework, gardening or any other kind of rough work. Even though a diamond is extremely durable, a hard blow could chip it.

- Do not place your fingers directly on top of the diamond as oils in your skin will dull the shine (a little like leaving finger marks on photos)

- Take off your diamond jewellery when putting on any hand creams as the oils in the creams will again make your diamond look dull.

Unless you regularly clean your diamond jewellery even the best cut and colour diamond will look dull and dark! Easy ways to clean your diamonds are listed below. These methods should NOT be used for any other kind of gems as no other gem is as durable as a diamond:

- With an electric toothbrush (any tiny remnant of toothpaste is fine) under a running water, using the toothbrush to get to the hard to reach places behind the diamond. Avoid using the toothbrush on highly polished areas of the jewellery (as it could cause scratches on the metal parts) focusing as much as possible on the diamond areas

- Or in a mug of kettle boiled water with a bit of any mild washing-up liquid, pop the ring in the just boiled water and soak for 2-3 minutes. Take out the diamond jewellery brush the item with a soft brush (e.g. old toothbrush) especially at sides and under the diamond and rinse with warm water. Pat dry with a soft lint-free cloth.

- Or using an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner (the boiling water method mimics the cleaning action of an ultrasonic cleaner).
